FIRST Stronghold is a medeival-themed tower defense challenge. Two alliances of three teams each compete to breach the opponet's defenses, weaken their tower by shooting soft foam "boulders" into goals on the tower, and surround the weakened tower to capture it. Points are scored by breaching defenses, scoring goals, and scaling the tower in the last 20 seconds of the match. Additional points are scored by scoring goals and crossing defensed during the 15 second autonomous period at the start of the match. Ranking points, used to determine the playoff finalists, are scored by breaching 4 of the 5 defenses, capturing the tower, and winning the match.
